In 1991, Guy Philippe Sounguet and Serge Akagah, travelled 1200 Km on foot, to explore Gabon, their homeland.
In 1992, motivated by the need to encourage other Gabonese youth to engage in this type of voyage of discovery, they created Aventures Sans Frontières, a Gabonese NGO.
Over the first three years, ASF's primary activities consisted of introducing children to nature through field trips.
During a journey by kayak from Libreville to Port-Gentil, the members of ASF noticed several leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) tracks on the beaches of Wonga-Wongué. Following this discovery, they developed a research and conservation program focusing on sea turtles, which resulted in an almost total change of the NGO's activities.
At present, ASF is dedicated to raising public awareness about research and conservation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
